The field of rheumatology is unique in that it can be defined and practiced in many ways. For me, rheumatology is the subspecialty of medicine dealing with disturbances of the immune system. As such, we are very selective in the patients that we see and screen for appropriate referrals. The most common conditions that we treat are lupus, vasculitis, myositis, scleroderma, autoimmune encephalitis, and severe inflammatory arthritis. Because of the severity of these conditions, only 1 or 2 new patients are seen per day. In order to be scheduled as a new patient, all appropriate examinations have to be provided in advance, as well as all previous medical records to help reduce duplication of testing and prevent delays in treatment. I strongly encourage fellow rheumatologists in the region to refer these patients to our office as their complex needs are usually beyond the scope that can be managed in a busy practice to maximize outcomes.

For our patients, we become their "medical home." Visits are comprehensive and address all aspects of their medical care. Because most of the conditions we treat are rare or refractory to treatment, the best evidence from the medical literature is used. While we are a small office, our staff fights for our patients and we almost always are able to obtain the recomment treatments. While we hold ourselves to the highest standards, we also expect the same from our patients and view the relationship as a partnership. Patients are expected to notify us if they are having difficulty with medications or do not wish to take them, to call prior to any visit to the hospital unless it is an emergency, and to follow up as scheduled.

Because we do not overbook patients and follow up care is essential, we have a very strict "no-show" policy - we will not reschedule after 2 missed visits without a 24 hour notice.

La especialidad de la reumatología es único, ya que se puede definir y se practica de muchas maneras. Para mí, reumatología es la subespecialidad de la medicina que trata con trastornos del sistema inmunitario. Como tal, somos muy selectivos en los pacientes que vemos y pantalla para las referencias apropiadas. Para nuestros pacientes, nos convertimos en su "hogar médico". Las visitas son amplias y ocuparse de todos los aspectos de su atención médica. Debido a que la mayor parte de las condiciones que tratamos son raros o resistente al tratamiento, se utiliza la mejor evidencia de la literatura médica. Aunque somos una pequeña oficina, nuestro personal si lucha por nuestros pacientes y casi siempre son capaces de obtener los tratamientos recomiendo. Si bien nos ceñimos a los más altos estándares, también esperamos lo mismo de nuestros pacientes y ver la relación como una asociación. Se espera que los pacientes a notificarnos si están teniendo dificultad con medicamentos o no desean tomarlos, llamar a la oficina antes de cualquier visita al hospital a menos que sea una emergencia, y para el seguimiento de la fecha prevista.

Debido a que no citamos mucho pacientes a la vez y la atención de seguimiento es esencial, tenemos una política muy estricta de "no-show" - no vamos a reprogramar mas citas después de perder 2 visitas sin un aviso de 24 horas.
